WITH areca nut (also known as betel nut, when consumed together with betel leaves) fetching high prices this month, farm owners have resumed their temporary business of growing areca plants in Kyaikdon Town in Kayin State.
Kyaikdon has generally been recognized as the main producer of areca nuts. Farm owners have a stockpile of nuts, as it did not fetch a good price last year. Areca nut price has somewhat risen this month, prompting them to resume their businesses.
The price of a viss (3.6 lb) of areca nuts ranged from Ks1,500-2,000 last summer. At present, the prevailing price is from Ks2,700-3,200 per viss. This shows that there‚Äôs still a fluctuation of prices.
Farm owners hire workers, paying each a daily wage of Ks5,000. They are expecting a high profit this year. Suppliers from Kyaikdon send areca nuts to other towns, such as Mawlamyine, Hpa-an and Mandalay.
