Around 100 university students staged a march in protest against the situations in Rakhine State including the shelling on the post-primary school, in Yangon on the evening of 23 February.

University students from the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU), Yangon University, Dagon University, Yankin Education College, Yangon University of Economics and Yangon East University marched from Sanyaydwin bus stop in Kamayut Township to Hledan Center.

They denounced the heavy shelling on the schools and the civilian deaths and called for free media access to local and foreign media and allowing independent investigation teams in Rakhine State.

A student said: “The reason why we staged a protest is there are human right violations due to the internet ban. In a bid to help solve the government’s problems, we put our fingers on some necessities of the government.”

The police have informed the protest leaders that it would proceed with the legal actions as the protesters did not ask for prior permission.
