Some vessels have run aground near Kani, Yinmarbin district, Sagaing Region in Chindwin River due to shallow water, said MP Tun Tun Win of No.2 Kani Constituency.

There are more than 30 vessels running aground near Kyun Village since February 21, he said.

“Passengers on the vessels are facing difficulties. I haven’t heard about the vessels running aground during my four-year term as an MP,” said the MP.

The vessels that became stuck are high-speed passenger ships, cargo vessels and other kinds of vessels. The emergence of sandbanks in Chindwin River this year is worse than last year, he added.

A total of 544 cargo vessels and 129 high-speed passenger ships are running in Chindwin River, according to figures in 2019.
