THE Myanmar U-22 men’s national football team arrived back from the Philippines yesterday afternoon after winning a bronze medal in the South East Asian Games.
The players and coaching team led by head coach Velizar Popov were welcomed by officials from the Myanmar Football Federation, Myanmar National League, AYA Bank, Ministry of Health and Sports, and former Myanmar football stars and fans at the Yangon International Airport yesterday. The Myanmar U-22 secured the bronze medal by beating Cambodia 7-6. Myanmar won the penalty shootout after the normal 90 minutes of play in the third place match. The match was played on 10 December at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, the Philippines.
Also, team Myanmar had a no-loss record in the Group A matches and entered the semifinals in the first position, while Cambodia was in the runners-up position. Myanmar missed their chance of advancing to the finals by losing to Indonesia 4-2 in the semifinal. Cambodia also missed the final by losing to Viet Nam by 0-4 in another semifinal match.
In the SEA Games men’s football history, Myanmar has won 14 medals: five gold medals, four silver medals, and five bronze medals, and stands in the third in the medal-winners ranking for the SEA Games men’s football event, while Thailand is in the first place with 16 golds, 4 silvers and 5 bronzes, and Malaysia is in the second with 6 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze medals.TOP IMAGE: The Myanmar U-22 men’s football team, coaches, and officials pose for a group photo at the Yangon International Airport yesterday.
