Myanmar migrant workers return before border gates are closed

Myawady –Myanmar migrant workers are returned to Myanmar before the border gates are closed as they are worried about the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand and visas of most of the workers will expire on March 31, sources said.

More Myanmar migrant workers returned to Myanmar on March 23 as the news about the closure of No.2 Friendship Bridge in Myanmar-Thailand border is spread around.

A total of 5,474 migrant workers arrived in Myanmar on March 22 and 7,010 Myanmar migrant workers returned to Myanmar on March 21.

Number of COVID-19 victims reached over 600 in Thailand and Thai government blocked Bangkok and border gates.

No.1 Friendship Bridge in Myanmar-Thailand border was closed on March 21 and mass numbers of Myanmar migrant workers returned to Myanmar on March 22 and 23.

“We made a negotiation with Thai officials to accept them till 6 am of March 23. We will welcome them back if Thai officials allow it. I want to tell Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand to follow rules and regulations set by Thai health officials to protect from COVID-19 virus,” said Wai Lin Maung, Labour Consul in Mae Sot.
